Therapeutic Horticulture at St Michael’s Hospice.

Talk title: Therapeutic Horticulture at St Michael’s Hospice
With: Kate Stainsby (OT) and Dr Jim Burtonwood (Lead Specialist Doctor)
Senior Occupational Therapist and keen gardener –  Kate talks to us about what gardens and gardening mean to patients accessing services at St Michael’s.
She will share with us how her vision of an accessible therapy garden for patients, became reality.
You will hear some poignant stories about what this space has meant to individuals -demonstrating how powerful that connection to nature can be.
Jim, a specialist in palliative medicine, talks about the therapeutic effects of gardens; benefits which are recognised and utilised by palliative care teams the world over. He’ll take us on a whistle-stop tour of the powerful restorative and therapeutic effects of the outdoors and how the natural world has shaped the modern field of palliative medicine.
So, whether it’s planting bulbs for loved ones, pinching out tomatoes in the greenhouse, or pulling up rhubarb from the raised beds – Their talk demonstrates that a life limiting illness doesn’t have to be a barrier to embracing gardening and being outdoors.
