West Mercia Women’s Aid (WMWA) is the lead regional charity working with victims and
survivors of domestic abuse across Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Telford &
Wrekin. The focus of our work is to both support and empower those who have had their
rights to safety, choice and self-determination eroded by living with domestic violence and
abuse, including coercion and control, stalking and harassment, and threats of harm
including so-called honour-based violence and/or forced marriage.
In 2022, we marked a significant milestone, commemorating four decades of dedicated
service. As part of this recognition we set up the WMWA Choir. We commissioned an
original composition titled ‘Still Strong’, a poignant narrative reflecting on our history and the
ongoing battle against domestic abuse. This stirring anthem serves as a reminder that while
progress has been made, our commitment to eradicating domestic violence remains
unwavering.
What initially began as an 8-week project has flourished into a thriving community initiative,
welcoming WMWA staff, supporters, and survivors. Earlier this year we received the Silver
Award in the People’s Choice category at the prestigious Smiley Charity Film Awards for a
documentary chronicling our journey.
We are so grateful for the support we have received and the opportunity to develop our choir
and extend our support network, knowing that together, we can continue to make strides
towards a future free from domestic abuse.
